America’s Tonedeaf President

Trump constructs ballroom despite massive budget cuts

In a country where burgeoning billionaires pour money into superyachts and rocket ships, government funding is crucial to decrease the rampant poverty present in the United States. President Donald Trump, however, continues to aggressively slash government funding for medical research, foreign aid, and food-insecurity assistance. Despite this, the president, a billionaire himself, destroyed the historical wings of the White House and invested $400 million in an extravagant ballroom. Federal judge Richard A. Leon ruled on April 16 that Trump’s construction of the ballroom must stop because Trump violated the terms of the original approval. Trump responded, desperately claiming that the ballroom was vital for national security. His argument for the ballroom construction has historically been shaky: he originally claimed it would be necessary to entertain large groups of guests, including potential international allies and investors. But the construction of this ballroom makes Trump’s true motives as president apparent: he hopes to gain fame and money from his position, withdrawing funding from necessary government agencies rather than benefiting the common good.

During his time in office, Donald Trump has personally made an estimated $1,408,500,000, which is nearly 10,000 times the median net worth of a household in the US. He uses his position as president to increase his fame and net worth–and, because of his powerful position and enormous sum of money, others pander to his wishes for their benefits. Despite calling Qatar a hotbed of terrorism in 2017, Qatar not only continues to invest billions of dollars in its private company, The Trump Organization Inc., but also went as far as to give Trump a $400 million jet in 2025. In addition, Trump has received handouts from the wealthiest man in the world, Elon Musk, who spent $277 million backing Trump in the 2024 presidential election, and continued to donate to and support Trump’s campaign until their falling out in 2025. Wealthy executives donate money to Trump to gain his favor; Trump wants the same from them. Evidently, Trump plans to use his ballroom to entertain more potential investors who, upon seeing the flashy ballroom, will pour their money into his company and support his presidency.

As Trump constructs his multi-million-dollar ballroom, people in and out of his country live in rising poverty, brought on by his own rampant budget cuts. Trump plans to eliminate SNAP benefits for an estimated 2.4 million Americans who rely on this government funding for food, claiming SNAP encourages laziness and “fraud”. Trump himself has been convicted of fraud, among other crimes. He villainizes poor people for being poor while pouring millions of dollars into a ballroom. In addition, he cut $4.2 billion in foreign aid from US spending. These slashes reduced US economic aid towards Africa by 90%, or about a billion dollars. The vast majority of foreign aid money is invested in international health, which includes prevention and treatment of diseases, including HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and influenza, in countries without the funds to administer necessary vaccines. Without US funding, the mortality rates in these countries will inevitably rise, and diseases that US citizens still see as pre-modern could potentially spread into the US through trade and tourism. The $400 million  Trump invested could fund between 140 million and 300 million doses of the COVID mRNA vaccine, saving millions of lives in the countries where the US once delivered aid. Instead, Trump will use this money to fund a lavish ballroom.

Trump’s priorities are evident: he would rather invest the country’s money in a building that benefits his reputation rather than in lifesaving technology or groceries for his underserved population. Taxpayers are forced to fund an overpriced and unethical construction project that they won’t reap rewards from. Fortunately, contrary to what Trump wants, the new White House ballroom will hopefully serve as a reminder of a selfish, frivolous president who wasted the nation’s money on personal gain while ignoring the needs of the very citizens he is meant to serve.
