In under a month, Zohran Mamdani has proved himself more than capable
In an increasingly right-wing federal administration, 35-year-old democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani’s landslide victory as Mayor of New York City was shocking. However, Mamdani’s tenure has been successful so far: he connects with New Yorkers on a personal level, creates policies that elevate New Yorkers’ quality of life, and displays a genuine interest in improving the city through his speeches and his direct involvement in projects.
Mamdani’s eagerness to collaborate with New Yorkers by inviting their opinions, feedback, and support has made him a popular and so-far successful mayor. Two weeks before his inauguration, Mamdani hosted a meet-and-greet, where he talked with over 140 constituents about their concerns and hopes for his administration. He posted a video titled “THE MAYOR IS LISTENING” with clips from these conversations. On his second day in office, recognizing that voter turnout for the 2025 mayoral race was the highest since 1969, Mamdani created the Office for Mass Engagement to further encourage the public’s participation in government. In addition, Mamdani campaigned primarily on affordability for the working class and advocacy for minority groups. Once in office, he held true to those promises, appointing racial justice leader Afua Atta-Mensah as the Chief Equity Officer of the Mayor’s Office of Equity & Racial Justice. Mamdani additionally announced the Preliminary Citywide Racial Equity Plan to be drafted and published this year. His dedication to public involvement in policymaking demonstrates his open-mindedness.
Although he has not been in office very long, Mamdani has already implemented policies that ease rent affordability for many New Yorkers. Early in his tenure, Mamdani took steps toward his goal of making tenancy more accessible and fair for renters. He announced the reestablishment of the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants. He signed executive orders to create the LIFT and SPEED Task Forces, meant to make rent and house ownership more affordable by finding land for development and to investigate home inflation and building delays. He created “Rental Ripoff” Hearings, an opportunity for New Yorkers across all five boroughs to speak up about disastrous rental stories and homeowning horrors. The administration now plans to publish a summary of the reported incidents and focus on eliminating these “ripoffs.” In addition, Mamdani has partnered with Governor Kathy Hochul to make childcare entirely free for two-year-olds and worked to lessen the cost of childcare for other age groups. These executive orders set the tone for Mamdani’s term: tangible solutions to New Yorkers’ daily challenges.
Mamdani genuinely cares about improving New York City. One of his first acts as mayor, he ceremonially helped pave over the infamous Williamsburg Bridge pothole, known for being a hazard to cyclists. Spreading the last shovel of asphalt over the bump himself, he expressed his care for New York’s issues, big and small. Many believe that politicians should not be emotionally connected to their jobs, but Mamdani’s passion, care, and ambition have made him especially popular among constituents. In his inaugural address, Mamdani stated, “I have been told that this is the occasion to reset expectations, that I should use this opportunity to encourage the people of New York to ask for little and expect even less. I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations.” Mamdani’s speech highlighted his intent to do the right thing, even if it doesn’t make him look perfect. Many politicians abandon the issues they campaign on as soon as they win the election, but Mamdani’s adamant efforts to battle universal issues underlines his personal connection to what he fights for. Mamdani is unlikely to deliver all of the ambitious changes he promised, but he is putting in genuine effort to do all he can to make New York City a better place for all of its residents.
Because of his connection to the people, personal devotion to his causes, initiative in implementing important policies, and hopes for the future of his city, Zohran Mamdani’s tenure as mayor has been successful so far. As a refreshingly young face in American politics, Mamdani has raised the standards of what the public should want from a leader: a truly dedicated, passionate person who stands for people from all walks of life.
