Zohran Mamdani’s Case Amongst Youth

Zohran Mamdani’s campaign and what it means for youth voters in America

A year ago, if someone looked up Zohran Mamdani, they would find the sparse resume of a New York state assemblyman from Queens. How has this low-level state policy-maker transformed into a leading voice in the Democratic Party? It’s a question that has captivated many and prompted comments from prominent politicians, including U.S. President Donald Trump. Mamdani has captured the nation’s attention by winning over young voters, catering his campaign towards average New Yorkers, and using honesty and accountability to separate himself from his opponents and predecessors.

In July 2025, Mamdani clinched an unprecedented victory in the Democratic primary for New York City’s mayoral race. If elected in November, 34-year-old Mamdani will be New York City’s youngest mayor since 1917 and its first Muslim mayor. Mamdani is a Democratic Socialist, a party whose main goal is to topple capitalism and replace it with a “system where ordinary people have a real voice in our workplaces, neighborhoods, and society.” His unique campaigning methods define a new era of American politics, which has previously been dominated by politicians of an older demographic. The push for younger legislators is a prevalent subject on the minds of many voters, and Mamdani caters to this need.

Winning over the younger vote has become increasingly difficult. Gen Z has not been swayed by lengthy speeches, impressive endorsements, or predictably scripted ads. Mamdani’s campaign has instead utilized social media to attract young voters. While many politicians now ordinarily use social media, it is typically seen as a performative stunt. However, Mamdani has demonstrated the power of viral social media content when a candidate understands their audience. Mamdani’s TikTok account, with over 1.4 million followers, features a diverse range of content. While Mamdani occasionally posts videos of his speeches and breakdowns of his policies, he features a wide range of other content. In one video, Mamdani wildly celebrates outside Madison Square Garden after the New York Knicks win a playoff game. In another, he candidly acknowledges his need for donations in videos by starting off saying, “I am about to say something you’ve heard every politician say ever,” drawing the viewer in. During his videos, Mamdani combines fast-paced editing with direct, to-the-point statements to capture the waning attention spans of people scrolling on social media.

In addition to his Gen Z appeal, Mamdani also speaks to the interests of everyday citizens. Mamdani frequently criticizes billionaires, talks about how often he rides the subway, participates in New York sports discussions, and makes an effort to connect to his audience. He tailors his campaign to appeal to as many people as possible, speaking in Spanish about his plan to support Latino voters in one video. In one video, he explained how his rent freeze policies will help New Yorkers save money and make it more feasible for them to attend the FIFA World Cup games in New York next year. By understanding his audience, he has been able to build a successful campaign targeting a wide range of demographics, and the rest of the country has been taking note.

The New York mayoral election is typically highly documented, but rarely does it create such controversy so early on in the process. Mamdani’s win in the Democratic primary was so unexpected that it made headlines across the country. Mamdani’s affiliation with the Democratic Socialists, what many consider a radical far-left organization, has prompted upheaval among the already fractured Democratic Party. Moderate Democrats denounced Mamdani’s involvement in the party after his win in the primary. Republicans have taken note of this division and have used it to drive a bigger wedge among Democrats. President Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, “Zohran Mamdani, who is running for Mayor, will prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party.” He hopes that a divided Democratic party will make it easier for Republicans to win elections and claims that Mamdani is the main reason for that divide. The fact that an assemblyman has been able to capture the attention of the President is no small feat.

Mamdani’s success also results from his honest declarations, a unique feature of his campaign. Younger voters often complain that politicians are unaccountable and unreliable. Mamdani is explicit in his plans for New York City: frozen rent, fast and free buses, and universal child care. He intends to reach his goals by placing higher taxes on New York’s top 1%. In addition to his transparency, Mamdani is also honest with voters about actions he regrets from the past. He told the New York Times he regrets some of the accusations he leveled against the New York Police Department in 2020. Mamdani owned up to his actions instead of denying them, as is common among politicians now. Andrew Cuomo, his main opponent, dodges serious issues such as accusations of sexual harassment leveled against him. Mamdani faces the truth and provides voters with the answers they seek.

Mamdani is the current frontrunner in the New York mayoral election, and, after winning the Democratic primary, leads Andrew Cuomo, backed by President Trump, by double digits in the polls. No matter the results of this election, Mamdani’s campaign has indicated how to succeed in today’s political landscape and amongst today’s voters. His use of social media, relatability, and honesty has appealed to the next generation of voters, changing how future elections may be conducted. Zohran Mamdani has combined strong policies with new ways of promoting them to achieve local success and national notoriety.
